LO2: Local Voice Summary Document

Written by Becky Jackson/Danielle Baggaley

Name:
The programme will be called ‘Local Voice’ because the purpose of the product will be to provide local people with a platform to voice their opinions regarding their community and improvements they think should be made for their local area to make it a better place to live in. This name is appropriate because it is short, memorable and summarizes the purpose of the product - people who hear or see the name on social media will realize instantly what it's about and what the programme is likely to contain.

Purpose:
The show will aim to inform people about what other people’s issues/problems are in the local area, as well as educating them on ways they have conquered a certain issue within the community. The purpose will also be to entertain the target audience by providing them with information about local news and events that concern their local area and community.

Content:
The content of Local Voice will include topical discussions featuring issues that affect local communities. The listeners will be invited to get involved and make their local voices heard via pre-recorded phone-ins (to ensure no offensive material is broadcasted accidentally) and online via social media on Facebook and Twitter. Local figures such as religious leaders, politicians, council members, the police, public servants and people from the audience will feature on the show and will be given the opportunity to debate issues with the presenters. The show will also contain information about local charity events and open days at fire stations and medical centers. Additionally, the presenters will deliver the latest news regarding the local area.

Frequency:
The show will be broadcasted every weekday morning between 7:00am and 8:00am. This is an appropriate time to broadcast the programme because this is generally the period when the target audience will most likely be available to tune into the show - they will be travelling to work and dropping their children off at school at the beginning of their work day.

Presenters:
The presenters of the show will communicate with the viewers in a informal, conversational manner and will use regional dialect. This is in order to give the show a relaxed vibe and also to give the audience a connection to the presenters and to make them feel included and part of the show. There will be two regular hosts of the show, one male and one female, who will represent the demographic and be from Sheffield so will share the dialect of the listeners. Additionally, they will have a sound knowledge of the City, so they're well informed about the topics they are discussing.

Target Audience & Demographic:
The target audience of Local Voice will be both females and males of approximately a 60/40 ratio. This is because women generally (but certainly not exclusively) are more likely to tune into talk radio shows as opposed to music radio shows. The demographic will consist of young adults and young families between the ages of twenty and forty. This is because parents are most likely to have young children they need to drop off at school between these ages. Due to the fact the show will be broadcasted on a community radio station, Sheffield Live!, the target audience will live in Sheffield and the local surrounding area. The NRS social grades of these listeners range from C1 to D, meaning that the demographic consists of not only professionals who have strong careers but also students and semi-skilled manual workers.

Audience Profile:
Stacey is twenty seven and lives with her four year old son Neal and partner Ashley in their small semi-detached property in Arbourthorne, Sheffield. She works as a support worker at East Bank Medical Centre, which is just around the corner from her home, meaning that she is a skilled manual worker. Ashley works full time however Stacey only works part time so she is the parent who takes Neal to school in a morning and provides daycare after school. In her spare time, which is getting increasingly more rare, Stacey enjoys catching up on her soaps such as Hollyoaks and Coronation Street, and likes playing online bingo during the adverts. As a support worker, Stacey is particularly concerned with the health and well-being of her family and the people in her local area. To keep in the know with local news, she often tunes into the radio during her daily drive to work as she generally doesn't have time to catch it on the television when she leaves the house.

LO2: Sheffield Underground Sounds Summary Document

Written By Becky Jackson

Name:
The name of our music talk show will be "Sheffield Underground Sounds". This name is appropriate as the majority of the bands featured on the show will be local; from Sheffield and South Yorkshire, and the show will be broadcasted on Sheffield Live! 93.2 FM. The "Underground Sounds" part of the name implies that the product will revolve around fresh, new, previously unheard of bands and artists.

Purpose:
My music talk show will entertain the target audience by playing music by local unsigned bands and providing interviews with them. This will be entertaining for the audience because they most likely will have never heard the songs before as the songs are by unsigned, underground, young bands. The genres of the music being played will be varied, but will mainly focus around indie and alternative bands. The product will also be informative because it will act as a music talk show, including band interviews. The purpose of the product is also to promote the bands featured. My competitors include radio shows such as “BBC Introducing” which is presented by Christian Carlisle on BBC Radio Sheffield and plays the “region’s newest music”.

Content:

This audio media product will be in the form of a music talk show. The show will feature two main presenters, one woman and one man to ensure both genders are equally represented. The presenters will chat about local issues concerning bands e.g. the closing of The Cockpit in Leeds, after 20 years of providing gigs for local people. They will include pre-recorded interviews with local unsigned bands and play their music. The show will also encourage listeners to get involved in debates by sharing their opinions via social media. Similarly to Fat Piggy MC's 'Sheffield Meltdown Scooter Sounds' I want to keep the show genuine and informal, so I probably won't include an irritating jingle in the production of the product. The adverts included in the broadcast will be for music venues, music shops and record stores as they will be appropriate for the audience of the show.

Frequency:

The show would be broadcasted weekly on a Friday evening from 7:00pm - 9:00pm. This is because this is the time when our target demographic will either be chilling at home or getting ready for going out in the evening, possibly to a gig or local club. In the latter case, our audience would enjoy listening to the music before going out as it would get them in the mood for going out.

Presenters:
There will be two regular hosts of the programme, one male and one female and both aged eighteen. This is in order to reflect the target demographic of the show and make sure the majority of people are represented. The presenters will be from Sheffield and will adopt and informal, conversational style using regional dialect and will have a sound knowledge of the City and the local music scene. This will be so that they know exactly what they are talking about when discussing topics and talking to bands during interviews.
Target Audience & Demographic:

The target audience of this music talk show would be 16 - 25 year old females and males. It would be targeted at college and university students. This is because, during my research, I really struggled to find another similar product that was aimed at this age group. Additionally, I fall into the audience profile of this show, so I know what people my age would want from this product. I think a typical member of my target demographic would be into local music already, they would possibly play an instrument and are into Britpop and indie music thanks to their parents or older sibling. Although being born in the 1990’s they are gutted they missed out on bands like Oasis and Blur, so instead they collect as much music as they can. The demographic will have a spending power of B or C1, they may have part time jobs but most of the audience will still be provided for by their parents.

Audience Profile:

Becky is 18 and lives in Sheffield. She spends all her pocket money on collecting old vinyl's and buying clothes. However, she also likes to go to local gigs and support local music. Becky likes seeing local bands as their music is fresh and different and also their gig tickets are less expensive than Paul Weller's. She enjoys going to local music festivals such as Mosborough and Tramlines to discover fresh talent. Becky picks up her guitar every few months or so but has decided to leave music making to her favourite bands. Genres she likes include Britpop, ska, 2 Tone, reggae, 60's garage, psychedelic rock and indie.
